Hey, thanks for replying. I see those on ebay, however I am confused.

It looks lượt thích these devices will work as the kind of controller I need, but How am  meant khổng lồ connect the drives?

I have only ever worked with IDE and ATA drives, so please forgive sầu my ignorance, I just cannot stand khổng lồ see tech go lớn waste. Especially working tech

Thanks for replying.

A question regarding flashing the device inkhổng lồ IT mode, is this a difficult process?

Can I flash them with any pc? bởi I need a hệ thống to vì it? Thanks, most of the resources I can find assume I already know things

Which standard declares so? And why don"t my SCSI cables và SCSI connectors not fit for SAS drives nor SAS controllers?
According lớn Wikipedia, SAS is serial attached SCSI and as such a successor of SCSI.

We are forgiving your ignorance but can"t find if you complement it by lazyness. What obstacles do you have sầu in looking up some info about SAS? What difficulties do you have sầu in understanding what you read in your lookups?
If you don"t have the knowledge about this standard, it is not sufficient lớn read the sections about connectors & cables (e.g. in that Wikipedia article), but you need a broader understanding of (connection) options you get with that standard to get the links and better underst& the section about connectors & cables. I had not to do with this standard as stated previously but have sầu no difficulty in at least understanding that article & some of its options. Why not you?
Already SCSI could connect a SCSI enclosure with several controllers on several computers simultanously. This hasn"t changed with SAS. I guess this impossible with IDE, ATA và PATA, at least I never read nor saw such a setup. Not sure for the case of SATA. But definitely, such configurations are possible with USB too. If you don"t need such options, you may choose khổng lồ read what you need for your conventional cài đặt with drives attached to lớn one controller on one computer. That"s your choice. And you may later return in order khổng lồ try understanding what you"ve missed and intentionally ignored in the first place in order khổng lồ quicker understvà what you wanted khổng lồ know và could more easily relate khổng lồ your past experience.

That can certainly be a problem with some places. Have you been in IT for long? Are you more of a programmer, not into lớn hardware?

And vị you see how you contradict yourself with that statement. How is Serial Attached SCSI not SCSI? It"s the regular SCSI protocol, just with devices attached serial instead of parallel.

If you purchase a HBA instead of a Raid adapter, you shouldn"t need lớn worry about IT mode. IT mode allows some Raid adapters to act as a simple HBA instead of a Raid controller.

I may have sầu named the devices improperly, I am not too knowledgable in hệ thống hardware, I just would like lớn put these khổng lồ use. I can get some pictures.

I vị not know the proper name for these device

Anyways, I hate khổng lồ see công nghệ of any kind go lớn waste. Do you know if these could be used with conventional pc hardware that are equipped with only a sata controller và sata ports?

That drive is a 73GB 3.0Gbps SAS drive sầu. Don"t expect it khổng lồ have sầu stellar performance. A modern 6.0Gbps SATA drive sầu is likely to outpersize it.

As mentioned above sầu, you need an SAS controller. It will not work with standard SATA ports.

In addition khổng lồ the controller, you will need the cables. The cables you need depend on the controller you purchase.

What you are going khổng lồ need:

A HBA or Raid adapter in IT mode with internal ports - there are thousands on EBay, some Dell br&, some HPhường, some LSI - they all are rebadged LSI adapters:

https://www.ecất cánh.com/itm/Genuine-LSI-6Gbps-SAS-HBA-LSI-9201-8i-9211-8i-P20-IT-Mode-ZFS-FreeNAS-unRAI...

A fanout cable that goes from the controller to lớn the drive và allows for power. (The connector on those drives is designed lớn connect to a backplane in a VPS which provides the power, in your case you need to lớn get power to the drive sầu from your system power supply as well as the SAS data cable from the controller)

Your fanout cable needs to be the correct type for the HBA you bought. The one I linked above sầu uses SFF-8087 ports so you would use something lượt thích this:

https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-SFF-8087-SFF-8482-female-Target/dp/B013G4FC2W/ref=sr_1_11?dchil...

Your system will also need a x8 or x16 PCI-Express slot available.

Okay, I see.

Thanks, my issue is,I know so little on the topic I don"t even know where to begin for researching it more broadly, I really am trying my best here.

I am a programmer, I was tech illiterate until around hardware is not something I am very knowledgable in

I"m not sure I"d mess with those old drives. 73GB is not much these days. But if you want lớn build a hacker"s computer start with a Dell H700 raid controller. You can get them on ebay and some secondary markets (like amazon) for about $50USD. For the H700s make sure you don"t get an H700i (this is an integrated raid controller). You want one that has a back plate so you can install it inkhổng lồ an expansion slot.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-512MB-PERC-H700-Controller/dp/B005JZDUHQ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=YXT07UYPI5S6&am...

Beyond that you are going lớn need a sas octopus cable like this one: https://www.amazon.com/EDIMS-Internal-SFF-8087-SFF-8482-Female/dp/B07HB1RNVH/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?dchild=... The H700 supports up to lớn 8 drives. You will need one of these cables for each 4 drives.

Lastly what ever computer you put the raid controller & drives into, make sure the power supply is sufficient lớn drive sầu the computer plus the new raid controller và hard drives.
